2017 – Year in Pictures

Wishing all of our friends and family a Merry Christmas, a very Happy Holiday season and a peaceful, fun and adventurous New Year! Here are some of our favorite moments from 2017.

January

Stephen, hiking during the start of an Atmospheric River, on Saturday, January 7, 2017. This storm, which started out with torrential rains and turned into feet of snow, would lead to days off from school, road closures and power outages across the region.

Avian, showing me her moves at Squaw Valley on Saturday, January 28, 2017. This was the first year since Stephen and Avian were five years old that they were not on ski team and it was bittersweet: nice to have them home more on the weekends, but we could have all used a little more time outside. We only downhill skied together twice this season (they went a lot with their dad, but thought skiing with me was too boring).

February

Before (October 2016) and After (February 2017). We spent endless hours shoveling a path to and around the hot tub. Stephen made wonderful snow forts throughout the yard, including one with a fire pit and chimney.

Stephen at the Nugget in Sparks, Nevada on April 9, 2017. Our great Spring Break Staycation 2017 consisted of a weekend in a casino, eating at buffet restaurants, swimming in the pool, and hanging out downtown Reno like tourists.

Avian and her cousin Lily Rose, sitting by the campfire on May 26, 2017, during our annual Memorial Day camping weekend with my brother’s family. This year we visited the South Warner Wilderness, near Susanville, CA, to camp, hike, hunt for morels, and pay tribute to one of Marcel’s fellow smokejumpers who lost his life fighting a fire there.

Stephen and Avian camped out in the Westy at Squaw Valley, on the last day of school, June 22, 2017. We spent the night and hiked up Mountain Run to watch the start of the Western States Endurance Run.

Stephen, at the Placer High School Track on Saturday, June 24, 2017, capturing runners at the Western States Endurance Run. After camping at the start, we drove to Foresthill to spectate and then to the finish to camp out and watch all the finishers from Saturday night until the last runner on Sunday morning.

Avian riding a horse in the 4th of July parade in downtown Truckee on July 4, 2017. Avian spent many days at the barn this year riding and helping with the horses.

All checked in for my 4th Tahoe Rim Trail 100 on July 14, 2017. While Stephen and Avian were in Massachusetts visiting the Borden family, I ran my most challenging 100 miler to date.

My sister Lynette, the Island’s Ecologist, with my parents, Grandma Rosie and Papa, and Avian, on a magical visit to Isle Royale on August 11, 2017. It took 2 flights, more than 8 hours in the car, and a 6 hour ferry ride to get us to the island. While we were away, Stephen went to 2 weeks of camp at Woodward-Tahoe and  also visited with his Aunt Shippa in Seattle.

Avian and Grandpa Bill on September 6, 2017 at Tahoe Forest Extended Care. Grandpa Bill and Grandma Bev finally moved back to Truckee this fall.

Lily Rose, LouLou, Stephen, Avian and Adelyne at the Celtic Festival on September 30, 2017 in Grass Valley. We met the cousins at the Nevada County fairgrounds and spent the weekend camping, listening to music, and playing dress-up.

Avian and Stephen in Yosemite on October 28, 2017. It was my first time to the Valley in 15 years, and the kids first time ever, made possible by our good friends from Reno, the Holmes, who organized and hosted a family-friendly trip.
