Johnson Canyon, Truckee, CA

While driving west up Interstate 80 from Truckee, California, you may notice a beautiful canyon, just north of the Donner Lake exit, in between Truckee and Donner Pass. This canyon, at one time slated for a 200+ home development, was acquired by the Truckee Donner Land Trust in two transactions between 2006 and 2012, effectively protecting it from any future development. The beauty of this place is overwhelming

A perfect early morning run before work. 12.5 miles, from the base of Johnson Canyon, following the Donner Lake Rim Trail up to the PCT, under I-80, then South to Old Hwy 40, and East to Donner Summit Canyon trail, and back down to the car left at the Summit Canyon trailhead. A sunrise and a sunset

Unable to sleep in (went to bed late and drank too much), I went for a 5.5 mile run around town this morning, and was rewarded by spectacular clouds and sunlight beaming through the fog. It was exactly what I needed to kick the hangover. Throughout the day, the clouds and colors were absolutely brilliant. I couldn’t wait to get out again for another run after work.
